Damaged fuel pump needs replacement
We were driving home from the shop and my car was low on gas. We were going to go home, then to Costco. Then half way home, the indicator popped up to show we have no gas and if I want to find the nearest gas station. My husband said we should get gas. I told him we can get it when we get to Costco.. We have enough to make it there. My husband asked “You know it’s bad for the car to run with almost no gas in it?”. I thought about it for a second and said. “Nope. Why would it be bad?”.
I remember someone actually telling me in the past that it’s better to run with less gas, because you can save on gas mileage, because your car is lighter. I didn’t think anything before when I was low on gas. I just wanted to make it to the most convenient gas station.
Anyway, hubby explained that it’s bad running the car on low gas, because it’s only the gas that cools the fuel pump and if there is not enough gas in the car, the fuel pump over heats, burns and gets damaged. Then you need a new fuel pump.
I learned something again. Hopefully, you did, too. Save several hundred dollars and a headache by keeping enough fuel in the car to cool your fuel pump!
